Formula Student is the world’s most prestigious student engineering design competition, organized by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) and various Formula Student bodies across the globe. The competition challenges university students to design, manufacture, test, and race a Formula-style single-seater car while managing every aspect of the project like a professional motorsport team.

It is not just about building a fast car – the competition tests engineering excellence, business acumen, teamwork, and innovation.

Structure of the Competition

The event is broadly divided into Static Events, Dynamic Events, and Technical Inspections.

Technical Inspections

• Technical Scrutineering: Verification of the car’s design, dimensions, and construction against rulebooks.
• Tilt Test: Ensures the car does not leak fluids and remains stable when tilted at 45° and 60°.
• Noise Test: Measures exhaust noise levels to ensure they meet safety standards.
• Brake Test: The car must demonstrate the ability to lock all four wheels and stop safely.

Dynamic Events

• Acceleration: Measures the car’s ability to sprint in a straight line (usually 75m).
• Skid Pad: Tests cornering ability and lateral acceleration on a figure-8 track.
• Autocross (or Sprint): A time trial that checks agility, handling, and car control on a tight course.
• Endurance: The toughest event – a 22 km race that tests durability, fuel/energy efficiency, and driver consistency.
• Efficiency: Evaluates fuel or energy consumption during the endurance event.

Static Events

• Business Plan Presentation (BPP): Teams present a business model to potential investors.
• Cost & Manufacturing Report: Teams justify the cost of every component in their car and prove real-world feasibility.
• Design Event: Judges evaluate engineering choices, innovation, and problem-solving approach behind the car’s design.
